Hotwire Out in Force at Hi-Yu, Celebrate Shoreline Parades

(posted 8/9/2006)

What have those crazy Hotwire folks been up to this summer?  Traipsing around in pink, that's what!  For the third year running, Hotwire has participated in the flamingo flocking fundraiser to support the Furry Faces Foundation, a non-profit animal rescue.  You can "flock" your friends' yards with a large array of tacky pink plastic flamingos.  Good-bye TP, hello flamingos!  Here is a link to some photos from the Hi-Yu Parade: http://www.digitaledgemedia.net/events/2006westseattle/.  The Hotwire crew will next be making an appearance at the Celebrate Shoreline Parade on August 19.  See you there!

Karl and Jeremy to Represent Hotwire in the US Barista Championship
(posted 3/27/2006)
Our own baristas, Karl and Jeremy, accompanied by their coach and former North American Barista Champ, Dismas Smith, will be heading to Charlotte, North Carolina, next week to compete in this year's annual national barista competition.  The United States Barista Championship (USBC) is an event designed to encourage and recognize professional achievement in the art of espresso beverage preparation and service. Competitors will prepare and serve 12 coffee beverages - one espresso, one cappuccino, and one signature drink of their own creation, for four judges in a space of 15 minutes. The winner of the USBC goes on to represent the United States at the World Barista Championship, in Berne, Switzerland on May 19-21.

The USBC will commence April 7-10.  Join us in wishing Jeremy and Karl well as they represent Hotwire before the rest of the coffee world.  Good luck, gentlemen!  Click here to read on about the results of the competition...

Hotwire Makes Good Showing at Northwest Regional Barista Competition

(posted 11/10/2005)
Three of Hotwire's Baristas competed in the Northwest Regional Barista Competition, held the last weekend of October in Seattle: Jeremy, Sean, and Karl.  They all competed beautifully and did us proud!  Karl was one of the top six competitors in the preliminary round and went on to the final round.  Not bad, for his first competition!  Way to go, Karl!  Click here to view footage of Karl competing - scroll down until you see his name.

Meet Tim McCormack
(posted 7/15/2005)

Tim McCormack has recently joined the Hotwire team, to head up our newly formed roasting division.  We are excited to have him on board and would like to welcome him to the Hotwire family!

Tim has more than twenty-five years of experience in the specialty coffee industry.  After ten summer seasons of digging on archaeological sites around the world – earning a degree in Anthropology, Tim went to work at the Starbucks Coffee roasting plant in 1979.  This was back in the era when Starbucks was a local Seattle business with five retail stores.  Read on...

Ground Breaking in North City
Finally the much awaited ground-breaking ceremony took place near Hotwire North on May 21.  It heralds some changes to the neighborhood's infrastructure that will take place over the next year.  Look forward to better sidewalks, more on-street parking, and fewer over-head wires.
Read about it in an article published by the Shoreline Enterprise.

Best Baristas in the World Come to Seattle
The 17th Annual SCAA (Specialty Coffee Association of America) Conference & Exhibition was held April 15 - 18 here in Seattle!  It was a huge event, with around 700 vendors.  Coinciding with this event was the World Barista Championship competition.  About 40 nations were represented by their top baristas.  It was amazing!  This year's top six baristas were as follows:  1st place: Troels Overdal Poulsen of Denmark; 2nd place: Hiroyuki Kadowaki of Japan; 3rd place: Salvatore Piccolo of Canada; 4th place: Carl Sara of New Zealand; 5th place: Jonina S. Tryggvadottir of Iceland; 6th place: Gunnhilde Seljenes of Norway.  (Read more here)  For those who arrived early to Seattle, Hotwire hosted an early-arrivers' Shin-dig at our North location.  It was a great time to hang out with old and new friends... before the real action began!  (Photos to come...)

Hotwire Baristas Competed in USBC
Four of our Hotwire baristas competed for the first time in this year's annual US Barista Championship, which was held in Seattle this year, March 10-13.  It was free to the public!!!  If you missed it, be sure to watch for it next year!  You will be wowed by the best baristas in the nation.  All of our baristas who competed did a great job.  Representing Hotwire were Molly, Billie, Eli, and Sean.  Come in and try their signature drinks!  Yummy!

A Fresh Take on the Daily Drip
Hotwire North is now serving drip coffee "by the cup."  Most coffee shops brew drip coffee in large batches periodically throughout the day, as needed.  It may have just brewed, or it may be a little old.  Brewing it by the cup allows for the absolute freshest drip coffee.  When you order Coffee by the Cup, your barista will grind fresh beans - beans of your choice, I might add - then pour water through directly into your cup via a gold cone filter.  The whole process takes a minute or two, but it is SO worth it!  Give it a try!
